    Get PDF
The comparative organogenesis of _Brassica napus_ L cultivars Cyclone, Star and Westar was studied. The cotyledonary explants gave a higher response to all the combinations of 0.5 mg/L 2,4-D and BAP (0.5, 1.0,1.5 and 2.0 mg/L} used for optimizing the conditions for callus induction. The best mean weight and mean length of callus was obtained at 0.5 mg/L 2,4-D and 1.5mg/L BAP for Star cotyledonary explants. For the complete plant regeneration the new method of exposing the explants culture to Growth regulator free medium was performed. The method was applicable to both hypocotyl and cotyledonary explants. The Shoot Induction Frequency for hypocotyl (6-34%) in the three cultivars is higher than the cotyledonary explants (3-23%). The method is speedy and almost all of the shoots and some unshooted calli (78%) form roots on the same media without prior transfer to rooting medium

Allelopathy and Agricultural Sustainability: Implication in weed management and crop protection—an overview

    Get PDF
Crop plants have defined roles in agricultural production and feeding the world. They are affected by several environmental and biological stresses, which range from soil salinity, drought, and climate change to exposure to diverse plant pathogens. These stresses pose risk to agricultural sustainability. To avoid the increasing biotic and abiotic pressure on crop plants, agrochemicals are extensively used in agriculture for attaining desirable yield and production of crops. However, the use of agrochemicals is also challenging the integrity of ecosystems. Thus, to maintain the integrity of ecosystem, sustainable measures for elevated crop production are required. Allelopathy, a process of chemical interactions between plants and other organisms, could be used in the management of several biotic and abiotic stresses if the basic mechanisms of the phenomena and plants with allelopathic potentials are known. Allelopathy has a promising future for its application in agriculture for natural weed management, improving soil health and suppressing plant diseases. The aim of this review is to discuss the importance of allelopathy in agriculture and its role in sustainability with a specific focus on weed management and crop protection

Developing a Framework for Improving the Quality of a Deteriorated Land Administration System Based on an Exploratory Case Study in Pakistan

    Get PDF
As in numerous other countries, the present Land Administration System (LAS) in Pakistan is not up-to-date and can even be considered as deteriorated. It is entirely based on paper land records and maps lacking standards with outdated information stored at different administrative levels of the responsible agencies. Such practice restricts the usefulness of reliable and quality land information for supporting tenure security to citizens, socio-economic development, and urban/rural development including infrastructure. To be able to understand, analyse and ultimately improve the present situation, this paper develops a framework for improving the quality of LAS. It gives ample attention to elements of an institutional and of a technical nature. In order to identify such elements to be included in the framework, theoretical perspectives on both institutional and technical aspects are firstly discussed. The selection of elements is done which is based on this in combination with the results from the case study. The exploratory case study was conducted in the North-West Frontier Province (NWFP) of Pakistan. The main outcomes of this case study are described here, leading to two results. On the one hand, an initial picture of the institutional and technical situation of the LAS in Pakistan is depicted (to be detailed in further research). On the other hand, this picture is used to select the elements to be included in the framework for improving the quality of a deteriorated LAS. The selected elements are presented including their application to the case of Pakistan. Finally, the framework is developed that will help to describe, analyse and ultimately improve a deteriorated LAS

    Get PDF
The purpose of this study is to examine the influence of exchange rate on foreign direct investment in Somali. The study used location theory to analyze the data by applying multiple regression models under OLS method. The results show that the overall model is significant. There is a negative and significant relationship found between exchange rate and FDI, while, a positive and significant relationship is observed between inflation and domestic investment on FDI, and a negative but insignificant relationship is observed between lack of government and FDI.The strength of this research lies in its time limit. The scope of this research was for the less than 50 years ending and including the year 2010. It is not known whether the results would hold if a longer period would have been researched upon. Further it is not possible to tell whether the same findings will hold for the period after 2010. There is need for the government to retain tight monetary and fiscal policies in order to stable exchange rate in the Somalia. Central bank should promote monetary authorities at managing exchange rate effectively to attract foreign direct investors. while utilization location theory, this study contribute significant to the literature by adding new variable to the model lack of government. Keywords- exchange rate, foreign direct investment and Somalia

Structural Geodesic-Tchebychev Transform: An image similarity measure for face recognition

    Get PDF
This work presents a new holistic measure for face recognition. Face recognition involves three steps: Face Detection, Feature Extraction and Matching. In the face detection process to identify the face area in face images, Viola-Jones algorithm has been used. Feature extraction is based on performing double-transformation, where discrete Tchebychev transform is performed on the geodesic distance transform of the grayscale image. Structural Similarity (SSIM) is applied to the resulting image double-transform to find matching factor with other image faces in the FEI (Brazilian) database. Performance is measured using a confidence criterion based on the similarity distance between the recognized person (best match) and the next possible ambiguity (second-best match). Simulation results showed that the proposed approach handles the face recognition efficiently as compared with SSIM

Anterior spinal cord herniation after multilevel anterior cervical corpectomy: A case report

    Get PDF
Many complications related to the resection of an ossified posterior longitudinal ligament via the anterior approach have been reported. Postoperative neurological deterioration is one such complication that may appear due to massive anterior spinal cord herniation related to a dural defect following resection of the ossified posterior longitudinal ligament. Specifically, spinal cord herniations have been reported to be associated with posterior approaches, and a large number of theories regarding this association have been offered by various authors. However, anterior spinal cord herniation is extremely rare, and its pathophysiology has not yet been explained. In this case report, we report a male patient who experienced anterior spinal cord herniation following anterior surgery. Spinal cord herniation may develop following the removal of the anterior cervical corpectomy. Therefore, surgeons should be aware of this condition when planning treatments for cervical spondylotic myelopathy via the anterior approach

Scenario Planning as a Tool for Long Term Strategic Planning. The Generics Drug Industry in the European Union

    Get PDF
As costs associated with medical care continue to increase, and populations continue to age, member states of the EU are increasingly concerned about their long-term public spending budgets. Generic drugs have been targeted by EU policy makers as replacements to high cost pharmaceutical drugs so as to bring healthcare costs down. The EU has taken several measures in the recent past to increase competition in the generic drugs industry within the EU marketplace. As competition increases in the EU generics market over the coming years, firms within the pharmaceuticals drug industry in the region must explore new strategies so as to thrive and prosper in the long term. Decisions on making the best use of available resources must be made and strategies must be reformulated to determine actions going into the future. These long-term strategies will help companies determine their current and future positions, and ultimately, the relevant steps that they need take presently to maintain their market positions. This report seeks to analyze the current EU macro-environment and provide possible future (twenty year timeframe) scenarios to which players within the generic drugs market can prepare themselves for so as to attain a competitive position in the long-term. The scenarios that were crafted after a thorough macro environmental analysis are: the positive scenario (“Todo es Bueno!”), the negative scenario (“Nein, nicht gut!”) and the mixed scenario (“Deux Union Europeenne!”). After the scenario crafting phase, opportunities and threats were identified for the possible future scenario, and thereafter, versatile strategic recommendations were made. Based on the scenarios, the report proposes strategies and recommendations by combining the implication of the scenarios’ opportunities and threats. The report advices 7 strategies that producers can use to add value to their internal strategies and/or further examine the implication of the recommendations presented. The report argues against traditional strategic polar thinking (cost leadership or differentiation) and proposes players to use mixed strategies. It suggests producers to identify the key ingredient that differentiated themselves from competitors. It promotes investing on research to soften the blow of sudden technology changes, identify new technologies to improve business processes, and research to develop new formulation patents. It also suggests producers to invest in stakeholder management, focus on green technologies, proposes investigating the advantages of strategic manufacturing location (i.e. Turkey), and finally, suggests formulating strategic alliances to organizational learning
